Mary Ann Carroll was one of the 26 original Florida Highwaymen. She leaves as part of her legacy rich landscapes filled with emotion. She was an innovative artist who charted the path for other female and African-American artists. Her unique view of the world lives on in her many paintings. She painted a variety of scenes, from ocean waves crashing on beaches to peaceful sunsets with brilliant orange skies. She depicted perspective well, creating foreground and background that invites the eye to move through her rich landscapes. She once said that what she likes most about painting is that it “brings peace to your mind.”
