Culture Reset: Five Ways to Strengthen Routines Before Small Problems Become Big Ones

A reset is not an admission that your system failed. It is how strong systems stay strong.

In this one-page guide, Mickey offers five practical reminders:

1

NOTICE THE DRIFT

  • Pay attention to what students are consistently doing differently from what was originally established. You can’t reset what you haven’t noticed.

2

RESET BEFORE YOU REACT

  • Before correcting the student, determine whether the procedure has been clearly retaught. Reteach before you reprimand.

3

SHOW IT AGAIN

  • Don’t assume students remember what success looks and sounds like. Model the routine exactly as you want it performed.

4

PRACTICE WITHOUT THE PRESSURE

  • Rehearse entering, transitioning, setting up, responding and putting equipment away before those routines become points of frustration.

5

CORRECT THE SYSTEM, NOT THE STUDENT

  • Before labeling the behavior, ask whether the real problem is unwillingness, misunderstanding, inconsistency or a missing procedure.
  • Print the guide.
  • Keep it on your podium.
  • Share it with your music department.

Then ask yourself:

What routine, if strengthened now, would make everything else easier?

Strong cultures don’t avoid resets. Strong cultures know how to reset.

Thank you for everything you do to help students find their sound, build their confidence and experience the joy of making music together.

Keep On Going.
