RL Lewis, Jr.
Florida Highwaymen Artist
Arts Programs
R.L. Lewis Jr., one of the 26 original Florida Highwaymen, has made Florida landscapes come to life throughout his career, painting cypress groves, swamps, lakes, beaches, animals, landmarks, cowboys and orange groves. He was inducted in the Florida Artist Hall of Fame in 2004. Inspired by his high school art teacher, he has paid it forward his entire career, mentoring students to explore their imaginations and expand their abilities. “When people ask me what’s my favorite painting that I’ve painted, I tell them the next one. It’s okay to reminisce. You must remember to enjoy the challenges of the art experiences because this will give you a real sense of discovery,” he said.
